How to prepare print-ready artwork: bleed, colour and resolution

How to prepare print-ready artwork: bleed, colour and resolution

Short answer: send a PDF at the exact finished size plus 3 mm bleed, in CMYK, with images at 300 dpi and fonts embedded or converted to outlines. Keep important text 4 mm inside the edge.

Bleed, trim and safe zone

  • Bleed is extra background that runs past the cut line. It prevents thin white edges.
  • Trim is the finished size after cutting.
  • Safe zone is the area inside the trim where text is safe from the blade.

Colour: RGB vs CMYK

Screens use RGB light. Printers use CMYK ink. Bright neon blues and greens on screen can look duller in print. Design in CMYK from the start so what you see is closer to what you get.

Resolution

An image that looks sharp on a phone may be too small for print. For flyers, cards and stickers use 300 dpi at the final size. For large banners viewed from a distance, lower is acceptable, but send the biggest image you have.

Fonts

If a font is missing on our computer, the text changes. Embed fonts when you export a PDF, or convert text to outlines in your design program.

Common mistakes

  1. No bleed, so a white line shows at the edge
  2. Text too close to the edge, so it gets cut
  3. Low-resolution logo copied from a website
  4. RGB colour that turns dull in print
  5. Very thin lines or tiny text under 6 pt
